Sleeping at the right time

Regularity is an essential aspect in the sleep of your child. Parents can do a lot of things to create a comfortable sleeping environment. If the little ones sleep through the entire night, Mom and Dad sleep better, too.

Newborn babies naturally become tired about every 90 minutes during the day and those are the times when they should take a short nap. Even toddlers sleep several hours during the day until the age of three or four years. Trouble falling asleep at night may be caused, for example, by napping too late before bedtime. If your child is supposed to fall asleep at about the same time every evening, it is important that they are awake during the four hours preceding bedtime. If they do not wake up by themselves before that point in time, you can wake them by gently stroking or talking to your child.

The internal clock

Overfatigue can make it difficult for your child to sleep at night. Babies take a nap about three to four times a day. The number of naps is reduced to two when the child is about one and a half years old.

Children do become tired now and then during the day and when they do they should really get the opportunity to sleep. If your child stays awake despite the sleeping impulse, they may become wide awake again for some time, but the need for sleep returns. Kids can become all hyped up due to the lack of sleep. Many parents know that. However, each child is an individual. Some babies need exactly this overfatigue to go to sleep quickly and easily. The best way is to watch your children closely for several days to find out what the correct timing for napping is.

Parents set the daily rhythm

Their internal clock lets the little ones become tired on their own, but the framework for the daily rhythm should be given by the parents. Researchers have found that the internal clock does not set the 24-hour cycle precisely, not even in adults. But we live in a society that functions according to a clock, so it is advisable to get children used to a fixed bedtime from the start. Mom and Dad want to sleep at a certain time, they want to sleep through the night and wake up at a certain time and that works much better if the children sleep well, too.

Eight o’clock in the evening: Bedtime!

The ideal time for the nightly bed rest is 7 to 9 o’clock at night. An hour before bedtime the atmosphere within the family should become quieter and rested. No more excitement and the whole activity level should be scaled down slightly. Soft music, quieter conversations, sitting instead of running around. Many families dim the lighting in the evening, turn down the TV or turn it off completely. Invent your own evening ritual tailored to the needs and likings of your family.

Pleasant atmosphere

To get a good night's sleep it is important that children enjoy going to bed when it is time. Never send a child to bed for punishment because it should only associate positive and sleep-inducing thoughts with bedtime and bed. Do you remember the cozy comforter, the soft pillow or woolen baby sleeping bag from your childhood? It is worthwhile to furnish the resting place of your child in such a way that it promotes healthy sleep because deep sleep is good for the development of your child.
