Which bed linens are right for you isn’t a simple choice to make, as questions of price, appearance and the feel of the fabric play an important role. For example, while some prefer smooth materials, like satin or silk, others prefer a more snuggly material like flannel or flannelette.
Of course, how pleasant a fabric feels also depends on the season. While we obviously tend to prefer breathable fabrics which cool us off in the summer, we’re drawn to fluffier, warmer bedding in the winter.
Which bed linen you ultimately choose depends, of course, on your personal preferences. In this article we will tell you everything you need to know about seersucker bedding, how you should wash seersucker bedding and whether it’s a better fit for summer or winter.
What is seersucker and how is seersucker bedding made?
Seersucker is made from cotton. The name comes from the Persian 'shir o shekar' which means 'milk and sugar'. The surface of seersucker bedding is quite unique, as the fabric usually has a crepe-like structure. During the weaving process, the warp threads clump together, which creates the unique, uneven surface.
Seersucker can be produced in three different ways. The method used is usually reflected in the product’s price, since seersucker bedding made by means of more complex methods generally costs more. In the case of high-quality seersucker, the crinkled surface is achieved by the method described above, in which warp threads are lumped differently.
In the second method, different fabrics are woven together, which then warp differently. The cheapest variant is to subsequently cause the material to swell with a caustic soda solution to achieve the crinkled effect.
What is seersucker bedding made from?
While seersucker was traditionally made from pure cotton, thanks to today’s advances in technology it can also be made from microfiber. Bed linens made from cotton seersucker, especially organic cotton, are slightly more expensive than those made from microfiber, but there are several reasons for this.
Bedding made from cotton seersucker
One of the main advantages of organic cotton is that it is sustainable. The farming of organic cotton requires 40 to 91% less water than that of conventional cotton. In addition, organic cotton is completely free of pollutants, since no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are used.
Organic cotton is a 100% natural product and is therefore biodegradable. On hot summer nights, cotton bedding can release sweat in the form of water vapor to the outside and prevents heat from building up under the duvet and sheets. That is why cotton is such a popular material for clothes and bed linens.
Last but not least, organic cotton is hypoallergenic and therefore suitable as bed linen for allergy sufferers. Cotton does not cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities and is also suitable as a fabric for baby sleeping bags in summer or winter. Bedding made from cotton seersucker is ideal for people with sensitive skin and can be used all year round.
Microfiber seersucker bedding
Microfiber is a mixture of fine fibers made of polyester, polyacrylic or polyamide. Despite microfiber’s thinness, it is very tear-resistant and durable. Cavities are created in the fabric as part of the production process, which is why microfiber can absorb a lot of moisture.
Microfiber is often combined with other fibers to make the fabric thicker and heavier. For example, you will find microfibre blended with flannel or fleece. Due to the roughened surface of the fabric, microfibre flannel and fleece feels very fluffy. In addition, a popular fabric for bed linen is microfibre satin. This bedding is characterized by its smooth and shiny surface and is ideal for the summer.
In addition, microfiber retains its shape quite well and dries quickly after washing. Since microfiber is incredibly absorbent and ensures a dry sleeping climate, it is often bought by people who sweat a lot. Microfiber is also very easy to care for and does not need to be ironed.
What season is the seersucker bedding suitable for?
Since the fabric has a crinkled surface, the entirety of the fabric never lies flat on the skin. The unique surface creates cavities that ensure very good air circulation. Seersucker bedding is therefore often used during the summer, though can be used all year round. Summer bedding is mainly characterized by the following two properties: its breathability and the cooling effect it has on the skin. In summer, we sweat more at night; bed linens not suited to summer form an insulating layer that prevents the heat which accumulates under the duvet from escaping. Likewise, it also prevents the evaporation of moisture and sweat which is stored under the duvet and sheets. This makes the comforter cover not only warm but also unpleasantly clammy.
Seersucker bedding, on the other hand, is quite breathable and allows moisture to be released to the outside. Smooth fabrics, such as maco-satin, percale, silk or Renforcé, are often used for summer bedding bed linen. As said above, seersucker bedding is great for the summer, since it does not lie directly on the skin. But it can also be used all year round without hesitation.
How is seersucker bedding washed?
In the standard size and even in the comfort size, seersucker bedding can be washed in the washing machine without any issues. As mentioned above, seersucker was traditionally made from pure cotton, but is now made from microfiber. Both materials are fabrics that can be machine washed at up to 40°C, and then dried without losing their shape. That said, it is always best to read the manufacturer's label beforehand to find out what kind of seersucker your bed linen is.
One of the best features of seersucker is the fact that it does not need to be ironed after washing! Since the entire surface of seersucker is that its surface or texture isn’t smooth, it always looks perfect even without being ironed.
When washing seersucker bedding 155x200, make sure that there are no other clothes or fabrics in the washing machine so that the bed linen has enough room to unfold. Since it can absorb a lot of moisture, the washing machine drum should also be large enough. When you dry it, spread the seersucker bedding 155x200 out so that it can dry quickly and completely.
